SLEEPING ON PURPOSE
SUBHEAD:
Many parents have inquired about the toddler clock, its benefits, and how to implement it effectively. Today, we'll explore this topic in depth, using the example of "Sam the Sheep," though another popular choice is the "Gro Clock."
A toddler clock is a visual tool designed to help children understand when it's time to sleep and when it's time to wake up. It uses colors and symbols (like Sam's eyes opening or closing) to indicate different times of the day.
I use the toddler clock for both my children, to regulate naps and bedtime. For bedtime, the clock turns red at 7:30 p.m., signaling it's time to sleep, and returns to green at 7:30 a.m., indicating they can leave their room. As they've grown, adjustments were made to accommodate their changing sleep needs, including a period where the clock turns yellow, allowing for quiet play before starting the day.
Regardless of whether they nap, quiet time is crucial for children to relax and reset. Using the toddler clock, we enforce a 60-minute quiet period where they stay in bed with minimal light and noise, offering them and us a predictable break.
A toddler clock like "Sam the Sheep" can be an invaluable tool for establishing healthy sleep routines and boundaries for children. It offers a tangible way for them to understand time, reduces bedtime anxieties, and helps maintain a structured day. Remember, every toddler can benefit from this tool, but it's essential to tailor the approach to fit your child's needs and be patient as they adjust to this new part of their routine.
